Can a teacher do this?

One of my teachers decided to give a test today. She said that if you're not here and don't write the test you get a zero. The thing is, it's not just people who skip the class who will get a zero it's anyone who isn't there. Even people who are legitimately sick and bring a note in from their parents or doctors saying so! Can she make you get a zero even if you're so sick you can hardly drag yourself out of bed?

A teacher has the right to offer "pop' quizzes during the class session. I call mine - "Reading Recall" If a student is absent, there is no way to respond to the pop quiz. However, I do offer other opportunities for a student to 'earn that grade' through something else given. Keep in mind - there are many ways that teachers assess students. They don't always have to be the usual "test".

In my school, each teacher must present a syllabus to the students which include everything they should know and expect for that school year - including the possibility of pop quizzes that they might miss. Parents and students read and sign and then I sign.

This prevents questions later in the year about "I didn't know....."

I also offer the opportunity for my students to know what their weekly grades are and they keep track using a rubric. They should not be surprised if they fail. They keep track of their own assignments, submissions and work. Additionally, because we are an Arts Magnet school, our students often get credit for participation in plays, band, and other dramatic opportunities in and out of school.

Legitimate absences are allowed to me made up within two days. Many students' don't even take advantage of this. Also, our state tracks absences anyway. If there is no 'excused' absence slip - 4 days - gets you a phone call from the truant officer. If your parents can't explain your absence reasonably to them, they will subpeona them to court and let them explain it to the judge.

Surprise quizzes .. i love those. YES, your teacher can do that. You may not like my response but i was subjected to a lot of those when I was a student. Guess what? I studied hard and I went to school always prepared and ready for anything.

But such is life, you know, school prepares you for life (after school) and trust me, experience is a far more bitter teacher than one who gives surprise quizzes.

As for those who were not there or even legitimately sick .. tough but that's life. LIFE waits for no one ... you have to jump in the "boat" if you want to be part of the crew ...

Teachers are suppose to follow a grading policy. Tell your parents to ask for a copy of it in the school office and NOT from this teacher.

I am sure that what she is doing is NOT in the policy. Have your parents talk to principal.

I SWEAR teachers are getting worse and worse by the minute!!

Absolutely.

I doubt her "if you're not here you fail" holds true to people who are legitimately sick and can provide a doctors excuse. She has the right to request proof that you are ill - most teachers know when someone is lying and when someone is not.

No she can't. I can guarantee the school administration will overrule her if she actually tries something that absurd. Don't sweat it

Yes, she can do that, she's the teacher.... but if some one has a proper explanation for missing the exam.... she might leave him and mark absent instead of giving 0 marks.......

no she cant do tht...tell your mom. and Report her...i swear teachers can b bitches there so dumb

she might be able to. is it fair? no. but nether is students bring in fake sick slips to class. Be nice to your teacher and talk to her. she knows who is who, and might just might give you a break if your a good student of hers.

learn from this, life is not fair, its not meant to be fair. its how you handle it that really matters.

is it fair that she has to back track over information that other students have missed just because they skipped class.

to do that she has to slow down the entire class, remember she only has a finite amount of time to teach the class.

your choice if you want to talk nice to the teacher or force her (by going over her head). either way you will loose in the long run. the grade is bad but force her; then you made an enemy of her. gain her respect just like you want her to respect you. know when to pick your battles; and which ones are worth fighting for, and which ones to ignore.

oh and fyi. i have personal experience with just the same thing but

worse. i was out sick for a month. the principle said to my mom that i would have to repeat the 10th grade. all she wanted was homework for me. it was denied. so with my moms permission i droped out. i studdied for a year on my own. went to a adult testing center and took the test. I got my high school deploma not a GED but a high school deploma. a year early. my mom took my deploma back to the principle of that school and through it in his face and said i told you so, and he did it a year early. she said you are an expert on education? yeah right!.

was it fair no, but you do what you need to do.

life is never fair, or should be, or will be. learn that and your ahead of the rest.
